My latest Volunteering Adventure with Sheffield Museums took me behind the scenes of the New Horizons Exhibition at the Millennium Gallery, where I supported the curatorial and exhibitions teams through a proofreading and editorial project.

Working closely with the Curator, Katie Irwin, I reviewed text for gallery panels, labels, and interpretive displays — ensuring everything was clear, consistent, and accessible to a wide audience. This process gave me a real appreciation for the level of care that goes into crafting the visitor experience — from the first word written to the final layout displayed on the gallery walls.

This project also deepened my understanding of museum communication and accessibility in interpretation, highlighting how thoughtful editing can make complex themes more inclusive and engaging for every visitor.

Key Skills Developed:

  • 🖊️ Proofreading and editorial accuracy

  • 📄 Consistency in exhibition text and layout formatting

  • ♿ Accessibility and clarity in public interpretation

This experience was such a rewarding glimpse into the collaborative process of exhibition-making — blending creativity, precision, and empathy to bring stories to life within the gallery space.
