When I moved into my new house, I came across a fascinating collection of historical artefacts left behind by the last tenant. These included family photographs of parties, weddings, christenings, holidays, and school portraits, as well as military photographs, postcards, letters, camera negatives, and film. One particularly moving find was a letter recognising Mrs Richmond, who rescued two schoolgirls in an accident. The earliest dated item is from 1919.
I contacted my landlord to see if the former tenant’s family could be reached, but unfortunately no contact was possible. To ensure these items are preserved, I am planning to curate an online archival project of the collection. For safety and privacy, I will blur the faces in the photographs while still showcasing their historical value.
Through this process, I gained valuable insights into:
🗂️ The importance of preserving everyday documents as historical evidence.
📸 The role of photography and personal records in social history.
🕰️ Skills in dating, organising, and contextualising artefacts.
🌐 Approaches to creating accessible digital archives.
🤝 The importance of reconnecting community history with families.
I hope to trace relatives or friends connected to this collection, so the items can eventually be reunited with their rightful family. In the meantime, the online archive will provide a safe and respectful way of ensuring their preservation and accessibility for research and interest.
📬 If you recognise anyone in these photographs or have links to the Richmond family, please contact me at skmcmillan2002@gmail.com.
