For my first event with Sheffield Museums, I supported front-of-house operations at the Crafty Careers Fair. My role included ticketing and signposting visitors, answering questions, booking participants for specialist activities and family crafts, collecting feedback, and helping with event close-down. This gave me first-hand experience of event facilitation, safeguarding practice, and public engagement in a busy museum environment. I was also able to visit their current exhibitions and learn more about Sheffield's industrial history.
Key Skills Developed:
🏛️ Visitor Engagement – guiding and supporting diverse audiences throughout the event
🧷 Safeguarding Awareness – applying Sheffield Museums' policies in practice
🧩 Problem-Solving – responding effectively to varied visitor enquiries and adapting to changing activity schedules
⏱️ Time Management – balancing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced setting
💬 Communication & Teamwork – collaborating with staff and volunteers while delivering clear guidance to visitors
📋 Event Coordination – managing ticketing, activity bookings, and feedback collection
🏭 Curatorial Knowledge – expanding understanding of Sheffield's industrial history at Kelham Island Museum
Attending and supporting the Crafty Careers Fair gave me a strong introduction to Sheffield Museums’ public-facing work and strengthened my practical event experience. The opportunity to observe career pathways in heritage and creative industries inspired me to continue developing my skills in collections, research, and engagement, with the long-term goal of building a career in museum and heritage collections.
