I visited Weston Park Museum for the first time to meet with Ruth Bean for my volunteer induction.

I want to highlight Sheffield Museums’ brilliant accessibility provisions: a well-graded ramp at the entrance, a working lift, multiple disabled toilets, fold-up chairs and benches in each room, tablets with headphones, subtitles on video displays, large-text folders for interpretation, and sensory backpacks available at reception. Each museum in the Trust also provides accessibility information online. Staff and volunteers were welcoming, helpful, and supportive throughout my visit. 👏🤩

While I was there, I explored the exhibitions, which were both diverse and engaging. My favourite was the Natural History display, aligning closely with my passion for animal welfare, education, history, and taxidermy. I also maintain a personal collection of animal bones and insects. 💀🪲

📌 Activities:

  • Attended a volunteer induction with Sheffield Museums Trust.

  • Explored exhibitions across the museum.

  • Observed accessibility provisions available for visitors.

🧐 Insight & Interest Gained:

  • ♿ Insight into the specific accessibility aids Sheffield Museums Trust provides for visitors (ramps, sensory backpacks, subtitles, etc.).

  • ♾️ How exhibitions are designed to engage diverse audiences.

  • 🤝 The importance of staff and volunteer support in creating a welcoming visitor experience.

  • 🧡 Greater awareness of Sheffield’s local history through the exhibitions.

  • 🦴 How my interests in natural history and taxidermy connect with the museum’s collections.

This induction not only gave me practical insight into the museum’s operations but also strengthened my enthusiasm to contribute meaningfully as a volunteer. I am excited to have opportunities to contribute to their archive, collections care, and events.
