I'm thrilled to announce that my partner and I have made the exciting decision to relocate from Derbyshire to Sheffield! After spending time in Gloucester for our studies, we both felt ready for a change of scenery and a fresh start somewhere new. One of the biggest factors in choosing Sheffield was wanting to be closer to my family again - I've really missed being able to visit them regularly, and I'm especially excited about being nearer to Lilo, my parents' French Bulldog who I absolutely adore.
Sheffield immediately appealed to us for so many reasons - there's something special about the city's energy and the incredible opportunities it offers, especially for someone like me who's passionate about museum and heritage work. The fact that it brings us closer to my family while opening up new professional possibilities feels like the perfect combination.
When we started looking at potential places to move, Sheffield kept coming up as this vibrant city with such a rich industrial heritage and brilliant cultural scene. The more I researched, the more excited I became about the museum landscape here. It feels like the perfect place for both of us to build something new, and for me specifically, it offers incredible opportunities that align perfectly with my interests and experience.
Having gained hands-on experience at places like Erewash Museum, Holst Victorian House, and through my work with The Poetry Archive, I'm genuinely excited to see how I can contribute my skills in visitor engagement, specimen preparation, and cultural programming to Sheffield's heritage sector.
Professional Opportunities I'm Exploring:
🏛️ Museum and Heritage Roles:
🏺 Collections management and specimen preparation
👋 Visitor engagement and educational programming
🗃️ Behind-the-scenes archive and documentation work
♿ Community outreach and accessibility initiatives
💻 Research and Data Management:
📄 Continuing my freelance data entry and research projects
🌍 Supporting cultural institutions with digital archiving
🗂️ Contributing to heritage preservation through documentation
🤝 Diversity and Inclusion Work:
♾️ Applying my passion for inclusive museum experiences
🦮 Supporting accessibility initiatives in cultural spaces
🌈 Contributing to community engagement programmes
🏙️ Connecting with Sheffield's Cultural Community:
I'm particularly excited about the potential to work with organisations like Sheffield Museums, Yorkshire Natural History Museum, Sheffield Cathedral, and Disability Sheffield Centre for Independent Living. Each of these institutions represents different aspects of what I'm passionate about - from natural history collections to making cultural spaces accessible for everyone.
🗺️ Our New Adventure:
This move feels like such a positive step forward for both of us. We're looking forward to exploring Sheffield's museums, getting involved in the local community, and really making this city our home. And of course, I'm absolutely delighted that I'll be able to visit my family much more easily now - especially Lilo, who I've missed terribly! For me personally, it's an incredible opportunity to grow professionally while being closer to the people (and pup) I love most.
I'm excited to share this journey with you all and can't wait to update you on the experiences and opportunities that come our way in this brilliant city! 🌟
